Gran San Bernardo Pass

This pass, located at 2475 m.s.l. connects Aosta Valley with the Swiss Valais. In around 1050 Saint Bernardo D’Aosta built a Hospice providing shelter to pilgrims and travelers. This millenary building, once very influential, is still open and running all year round. The entry is free and the tour of the chapel is highly recommended. The must-see include the wooden choir, pieces of sacred jewellery, miniated manuscripts and liturgical vestments. The Saint Bernard dog breed is the emblem of this place. With their large size and very gentle nature these dogs were chosen by the monks to open paths in the snow, allowing the rescue of lost wanderers. The Barry Foundation is still raising some animals and puppies during the summer in a shelter which can be visited along with the museum.
